The Grange Golf Club Bridge Remediation

The Grange Golf Club engaged AEGIS to conduct a condition assessment and provide expert recommendations for two pedestrian bridges located on the course. The client sought to ensure the ongoing safety and structural integrity of these bridges following recent flood events.

AEGIS carried out visual inspections of both steel pedestrian bridges, which revealed age-related deterioration including corrosion, section loss in steel elements, erosion at the footings, and safety concerns stemming from the absence of protective barriers. The recent flooding had submerged the bridge decks, raising further concerns regarding their durability and resilience to future events.

While both bridges were found to be in sound structural condition, targeted remediation actions were identified to extend their service life. For Bridge 1, this included the replacement of deteriorated steel elements and bearing plates, protective coatings to the steel substructure, bridge decking replacement, scour and erosion protection at the footings and abutments, and the construction of a retaining wall for the southern approach slab. For Bridge 2, protective coatings were also recommended alongside the installation of compliant safety balustrades.

Full bridge replacement was not necessary, as no immediate structural failures were identified. Instead, AEGIS delivered a prioritised set of remediation actions, each assigned a risk category and a recommended completion timeframe of 12 to 24 months. Once implemented, these actions will restore and enhance the safety, durability, and resilience of both bridges, aligning with the client’s operational needs and current compliance standards.
