Project - The Bellambi

AEGIS Consulting Engineers + Project Managers were appointed as the lead Design and Engineer for the retaining wall reconstruction at Bellambi Lane, involving the design and supervision of reinforced earth retaining walls (MSE walls) — engineered structures that combine reinforced soil and concrete elements to deliver efficient soil retention and long-term slope stability.

🔧 Our role included:

  • Redesigning a 50 m long, 4.1 m high deteriorated concrete block retaining wall along Bellambi Gully.

  • Developing a reinforced concrete footing supported on screw piles and a reinforced soil mass using unidirectional geogrid to enhance global stability.

  • Managing coordination across multiple stakeholders, including:

    • Local Council, to secure permits and ensure environmental compliance for works within the creek.

    • Piling contractors, to modify the original bored pier design to screw piles, reducing costs and installation complexity.

    • Geotechnical engineers, to verify design performance and assess stability.

    • Surveyors, to confirm wall alignment and correct positioning.

⚠️ Project challenges:
A design change was required to modify the wall location to take into account changes in contours due to storm events and in accordance with updated Council requirements. AEGIS promptly redesigned the wall footing system and coordinated all parties to maintain compliance and structural integrity.

👷‍♂️ Project Team:

  • Surveyor: Orion & Masters Surveying

  • Geotechnical Engineer: Terra Insight & KMK Geotechnics

The result:
• A robust, cost-efficient retaining wall system providing long-term stability.
• Reduced construction complexity through innovative use of screw piles and geogrid reinforcement.
• A compliant and environmentally responsible solution achieved despite site constraints.

Another great example of AEGIS delivering practical, compliant, and cost-effective infrastructure solutions through proactive design and project management.
